The original Night Court series ended 31 years ago. After all these years, Marsha Warfield is continuing her television comeback with a Netflix show.
31 years after the finale of the original Night Court, Marsha Warfield continues making her television comeback by starring in a Netflix comedy show. Born on March 5, 1954, Warfield first dipped her feet in the world of television by making her debut in The Richard Pryor Show in 1977. After making a brief appearance in 1979's Legend of the Superheroes, Warfield started gaining momentum in her TV career in the early 80s. With what followed, she made appearances in several television shows like Riptide, Family Ties, and Cheers before getting her big break in NBC's Night Court.
After earning immense acclaim and popularity for her portrayal of Rosalind "Roz" Russell in Night Court, Warfield kept the ball rolling throughout the 90s by playing a myriad of characters in shows like Empty Nest and Smart Guy and movies like Caddyshack II and Doomsday Rock. During all these years, she also did stand-up comedy and even won the San Francisco International Comedy Competition in 1979. Over three decades following the end of the original Night Court, Marsha Warfield is seemingly making a television comeback in 2023 — here's how.
Set in Indiana, The Upshaws is a sitcom that follows the day-to-day snags of an African-American family striving to improve their lives despite facing many challenges and roadblocks. In its fourth season's episode 5, titled "Really, Mama?", The Upshaws introduces Marsha Warfield as Benny Upshaw's mother, Glodine. This happens to be her second role in 2023 after her cameo in the Night Court's reboot, which premiered 31 years after the original Night Court series' finale.
Recalling how she ended up reprising her role as Roz in the Night Court reboot, Marsha Warfield said (via TVLine) that she did not think the show's creators would want her to be a part of the reboot's cast but was willing to accept the role if given the opportunity. She added that being a part of the new Night Court and reuniting with co-star John Larroquette "was so comfortable and so nice." The actress also confirmed that her character, Roz, will return in Night Court's season 2, affirming that her journey with the show that first gave her the spotlight will continue after all these years.
In the 90s, Martha Warfield made her last television appearance in the 1999 series Veronica's Closet. She did not take any roles after that for 22 years before finally playing Antonia "Toni" Wilson in 9-1-1 in 2021. Explaining her two-decade hiatus (via Pride Source), Warfield said that she had retired and was not working. In 2001, she moved to Vegas and did not start working again until 2015. After doing standup in clubs, she decided to get back to acting and is now "building it up to where it’s ready to showcase." Hopefully, moving forward, Martha Warfield will continue showcasing her acting and comedic talent in television shows like The Upshaws and Night Court.
